- January 25, 2005: I Don’t Know || No. of Comments: 7
Just as the bud on the Amaryllis named Theo begins to open, revealing its crimson lining, our relationship closes. I don’t know if it was the right decision, or what is true or what is merely a reflection of the other person’s feeling and desires. I don’t know why things don’t work when we want them to, or why strength of will and good intentions just aren’t enough. Doubt is my biggest enemy….

- January 21, 2005: Beating Barbara || No. of Comments: 4
This week my co-worker put a life-sized cardboard cutout of Barbara Bush just inside her office. Barbara, wearing a golf-ball-sized pearl necklace, a plaid sweater thing and rosacea cheeks, is staring into the hallway. Her smile is creepy. But I guess that’s normal. The first 10 times I walked by, she scared the crap out of me. But then I got used to her. Now I expect her constant presence, and sometimes I talk to her when no one is around to hear. Here’s a question for the lonely: How many ugly, nasty, schmoopy things do you see or experience…

I’m freezing up here in negative-degree-land. At least it’s pretty, but only when you’re on the inside looking out. Here’s a view of the Mississippi River, taken from the warmth of my office. Clicky-click for a larger, non-blurry edition (I hate that it does that)….
- January 11, 2005: Duality of Being || No. of Comments: 1
I am more and more certain that we are surrounded not by the present, fleeting moments, but by the past, as well. Our need to connect things, our innate fear of solitude cause us to subconsciously relive the past even as we pass through the present. A ticking clock on my wall connects me to the house of my babysitter’s when I was in grade school, a house where many antique clocks adorned the walls, each striking the hour, quarter hour and half hour in their own tone. They are all gone now, destroyed by an arsonist. But the clock…

- January 9, 2005: $2 Mood Rings || No. of Comments: 8
I’m wearing a mood ring right now. It’s not just any mood ring, though. It’s a $2 mood ring. And in the world of such things, that’s a pretty classy mood ring. The other day I was in a meeting at work. We were talking about normal work things when my co-worker scared the poo out of me by yelling: “IS THAT A MOOD RING?” “Uh… hehe. Yeah.” “Two minutes ago it was blue and now it’s green.” “I’m sorry. I have mood swings.” In the world of such things, $2 mood rings are high-end — the best in their…

I’m sure most of you know the background of this little drama, so I won’t bother with that. As with Mighty, J left several comments on my site over the last few months, all from the same IP address. This morning I used that address and found a messageboard at dannyandpaul.com — the site of a young, gay character from MTV’s “Real World.” In summer 2003, someone whose name starts with J posted more than a few messages on the dannyandpaul messageboard. All were from the same IP address as J. In these messages, he talked about growing up in…

Nelson Mandela’s Son Dies of AIDS (Link requires registration. Use ‘nty42322’ as username and password.) This article provides just one more reason Nelson Mandela is on my short list of most-respected people. Unlike most American politicians, he is a true leader and voice of the people. The United Nations has estimated that about five million South Africans, including more than one in five adults, have AIDS or have been infected with H.I.V. But families usually attribute deaths from the disease to other causes. Mr. Mandela challenged that practice on a number of fronts, suggesting that openness is actually the way…
