Disappointed

From Outfront Minnesota:

Today, the Civil Law and Elections Committee of the Minnesota House, in an extraordinary hearing taking place in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, voted 7-5 along party lines to support the proposed amendment to the Minnesota Constitution to withhold legal recognition from same sex couples and their families (HF 0006).

The committee vote was an opportunity to bring together hundreds of fair-minded people from all over the state to show support for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender equality. Supporters gathered in peaceful demonstration, wearing “Vote No; it’s just fair” stickers.

House File 0006 will now go to the House Ways and Means Committee for budgetary consideration. If it passes that committee, it will go to the House floor for a vote.

Senator Michele Bachmann has announced that she will introduce a companion bill in the Minnesota Senate, but the bill has not yet been introduced.

More.

I had a meeting today with some Congressional staff here in DC to discuss lobbying strategy against the federal amendment. We agreed that we can use the fact that states are banning gay marriage on their own as a good argument against toying with the U.S. Constitution. After all, the state amendments really weaken the claim, made my FMA supporters, that the states need some kind of help.

Of course, that's not very comforting on a day like today . . .

I will oppose this amendment by:
1) watching "the L Word"
2) picking up "Lavender" at the Y in plain sight
3) trying to be better friends to my straight co-workers and acquaintances
4) getting closer to my brother and trying to get a few rational words in while he rants on as a born-again christian
5) thinking of ways to let people in my daily life know that gay oppression is wrong
6) crying and screaming and laughing hysterically when I need to
7) I don't know...
