Practically a New Life

I’m sitting on my bed surrounded by bare cream-colored walls, boxes of stuff and piles of clothes. As I lean my back against the wall, my bed keeps sliding on the hardwood floors until my pillows fall on the floor.

I don’t handle changes in my routines well. Especially big changes that affect my sense of home. My shoulders and neck are tense and I haven’t been able to sleep lately.

Besides moving yesterday, I also added to the stress by buying my first car. (More on that in a separate entry.)

Looking at it objectively, though, there have been some pretty big changes in the last few weeks. I started a new job, moved to a new apartment and got a new car (which doesn’t seem like it should be a big deal, but it is). Soon I’ll have to join a new gym because my old one is too far away. Now I have to figure out the bus schedule so I can get to work on time and where the closest grocery stores are and where to get the cheapest gas and where the nearest ATM is. It’s like a new life.

Thankfully, it’s not REALLY a new life, because I like the one that I have. I like Minneapolis — though it truly snowed while we played softball today — I like my friends and my new job, and I’m sure I’ll like my new place and my new car once they become part of my routine.

For now, though, I need a massage. If only I hadn’t gone and bought a new car, I would get one, too.

Little Aaron's all growed up. Those are some life-altering changes, and I admire your courage. I'm going to be moving here soon (in like 6 months) and I'm completely petrified. Not only will I be very far from home, I won't know anyone, or know of anything near me. So in that sense, you're a lucky bastard. :) I demand pictures of the new homested and the car.

ditto your "i hate moving" sentiment. :) sounds like things are going really well for you... whats up with buying a car when you move INTO the city though? the first thing i do when i move into a city is ditch the car... muah.

Johnny: Good luck to you getting around hapless Minneapolis without a car. Aaron: Go get a massage from Cat at Studio 54th on W. 54th in Minneapolis. She's excellent. And have fun unpacking -- it's almost as fun as physically moving the stuff.

You can do it! This is nothing compared to moving from Chicago to Minneapolis, right?

You're right, Dunner. Perspective perspective perspective.

P.S. Most Excellent Copy Editor Byf, Did you catch the affect/effect mistake? It's fixed now. My grammatical vigilance is slipping.

If you want me to be an ass and point out every typo, I'd be happy to. Though your writing is pretty clean. I give it a 95.

Are you going to join my gym, the YWCGAY?
