Dive bars, clay masks, rock climbing and trains
![]()
Me getting misted behind Cascade Falls in Osceola, Wisc.
This evening I returned from another short trip out of the city, this time with my good friends, Adam, Justin and Kevin. Friday we drove an hour north to St. Croix Falls, where we checked into the fabulous Holiday Inn Express and headed out to mix with the locals at a dive bar. We discovered, though, that we didn’t fit in. Evidently it’s a requirement for men there to wear camouflage hats at the bar. And when we went to the jukebox, the bartender yelled to us, “AS LONG AS IT’S NOT PRINCE!”
Which left Dwight Yoakam, bad “rock hits” mixes, and, inexplicably, Ani DiFranco.
I do have to say, though, that the girls loved us. Whoever believes patrons at gay bars are vultures hasn’t been to a bar in a one-stoplight town. The women there are almost famished for fresh meat.
But, alas, we left the bar without any females in tow and headed back to our hotel for clay masks, foot lotions and back massages. (No, I’m not kidding.)
Today we hiked around the St. Croix River. After a big storm early this week, the water was 15 feet higher than normal. Amazing how nature compensates.
We also went on a train ride. That’s a story in and of itself, and maybe I’ll get to it later. Right now, though, it’s time to sleep. Here are photos up the wazoo (including lots of cheesy glamor shots).
