Hey ‘Dina

There is a tradition after Ultimate Frisbee games that dictates that each team must — if they agree — make up a song and sing it to each other after the game is finished. Lame, right? That’s why we rarely follow the tradition.

Sunday, though, we won our first game after four weeks of play. Spirits were high as we finished the last of our Gatorades and pulled on our warmup pants, our sweat-soaked hair clinging to our faces.

The other team approached.

“Do you guys wanna do a cheer?”

Uh… we looked at each other and shrugged.

“Sure.”

The opponents formed a huddle to start planning. We did the same.

10 minutes later we approached them. I got on my hands and knees between my teammates Adam and Greg. The grass was cool and very green. Two people climbed on top of our backs. One person climbed on top of their backs. We were… A human pyramid.

In front of our pyramid, my teammates Ana and Megan did cartwheels back and forth while we sang this song — to the tune of “Hey Mickey.”

Hey ‘dina, you’re so fine, you’re so fine you blow my mind. Hey ‘dina.
Hey ‘dina, you’re so fast, you’re so fast you ran our ass. Hey ‘dina.
Hey ‘dina, you’re so fine we’ll BUY YOU BOOZE ANY TIME!

The other team erupted in cheers.

Did I mention it was a high school team that we beat the snot out of? Yeah, we were proud.

Coming next for me to share with you… Volleyball cheers.

You should see the image I have of this in my head - amazing! You Yanks what you like? You wouldn't catch us Brits doing anything like that - just a firm handshake if your lucky - tally ho!

I don't know about "lame" ... :o) As you may know, after a rugby match, the hosting team takes the opponents to their home bar, win or lose, buys them copious amounts of beer and often feeds them. At these drink-ups, we all sing songs and do cheers -- all fueled by the mass consumption of alcohol. Of course, they are always very bawdy, at times misogynistic, frequently laced with sexual innuendo, and occasionally horrifying. And you can imagine how a gay team singing hetero-centric songs can put a fresh twist on things. It's all in the name of good sportsmanship.

Most of the songs are traditional, but there are certain players among us who are always striving for innovation with new or adapted songs. If you're ever in New York, I hope you can witness our very own "Duck Song."

I think your cheer was super cute. And I think the tradition is a good one. Take it and run with it!
