The Joy of Sets
Last week we won our first Ultimate Frisbee game and this week we won our first volleyball game, despite our usual comical play (which I love). For example, I almost knocked a guy out in the bleachers with a spike that went up instead of down. Sadly, it’s a frequent thing.
But somehow we won a game and so our cheers were louder than usual. With a teamname like “Joy of Sets,” you know things are bound to get a little dirrrty. As I promised in the last entry, here are some of our most regular cheers (which must always be done in a huddle, with hands in the middle and a loud, guttural “huh!” at the end of each one):
“Hard, controlled sets!”
This is for timeouts when we are sucking really badly and need to recompose ourselves and reapply our makeup.
“Group sets!”
Translation: Work as a team, you morons!
“Hot, sweaty sets!”
This works well anytime, but especially in the middle of heated, intense match, when Adam’s shirt is soaked in sweat and we all have a crazed look in our eyes.
“Safe sets!”
I suggested this one, but no one went for it. In fact, they gave me a weird look that said, “Uh, no, you moron.” I guess it sounds too… safe. Instead, we tacked it onto some other cheers: “SAFE Group sets!” “Hot, sweaty, SAFE sets!”
“Tantric sets!”
For the rare but enjoyable situation when we are kicking ass.
“Sets in Doug’s basement after the game!”
OK, that was Doug’s dream idea. I’m sure he meant it figuratively, not literally.
