To-Do

Sitting just to the right of my keyboard is my to-do list. It’s always there, organizing my life, reminding me what needs to be done and providing a sense of accomplishment when items are checked off. I’ve tried using the task lists on the computer, but checking things off on a screen just doesn’t provide the same satisfaction as on paper. Like other people, I often add items to my checklist after they are completed, just so I can see those encouraging check marks.

Here is my current to-do list (always written in blue ink):

  • Buy 40 squeegees (checked)
  • Valleyfair analysis (checked)
  • NT holiday talking points (checked)
  • Recap meeting with MA (checked)
  • :10 and :15 approval (checked)
  • Review Regency (checked)
  • Regency best practices, analysis (checked)
  • Finalize NT window graphics (checked)
  • PO for Copycats (checked)
  • NT competitive analysis (not checked!)
  • Update Christmas gift list (for work, not for me — not checked!)
  • Talk to Luke/Steve re: Tampa board (checked)
  • Send calendar ideas to NT (not checked!)
  • Upload NASCAR ad (checked)
  • October timesheets (I hate timesheets — not checked!)
  • Send CM size of snipe (not checked!)
  • Schedule NT radio sessions, finalize scripts (not checked!)
  • Coke package (not checked!)
  • Present rec. for NT catalog intros (not checked!)

I make a to-do list every Friday for the weekend - amazing how just making a list makes you feel like you have done something

My mom goes crazy with to-do lists, except in her cases it's to-do books. Even though she rarely gets through half of the things she writes for 1 day, and she ends up doing a bunch of things that weren't on the list, she still feels satisfied when she gets to write a checkmark on the completed tasks. (and then writes down the extra things and checks them as well)

Ummm...Aaron? That looks like all work stuff. What fun is that? What about "Don't forget the Y?" :)

Came across your blog (can't remember how though).

I totally agree with you. The checklist on an actual writing pad is so much different than on the computer screen.

Once I have accomplished a task, I normally cross it out by striking a line on it. It feels like I'm being organized and productive at the same time.
