The Office: Minneapolis, Vol. 1

Today I’ve become suddenly and irrationally afraid that the cleaning ladies are taking my recycle bin and dumping its contents in with non-recyclable garbage, making my already feeble attempts at environmental responsibility completely futile.

Is there a phobia for that?

I do not believe there is a phobia but it is entirely plausible that your waste is being mixed. I had an odd opportunity to see the U of M's recycling and waste management facility, and to my suprise many recyclable materials were simply added to the common waste mix. Not an uncommon practice in many municipalities.

Your attempt at environmental responsibility is not a futile one, however recycling is economically imprudent even when waste is presorted. This is sad but true with a vast majority of "recyclable" materials.

Dumpsteropathy? Custodiphobia? Phychosomatic recylerosis?

So now that your fear has been confirmed as a rational one, do you still feel irrational?

That's not irrational, I caught the cleaning staff at a previous place of employment doing exactly that. I don't know if they were intentionally doing it, or just didn't have a clue that the one bin was for recycling.

Phobia or not, there are still ways to recycle the paper. If you live in a house and have a back yard, shred the paper and add it to a compost pile. I've seen a cool in-home composter that creates rich organic matter beneath your cabinets with no smell at all. Check it out at http://www.naturemill.com/features.html and no I don't work for these people, I just think it's a cool idea. Keep doing what you do Aaron! (hope this isn't Minnesota-Nice... barf, you betcha)
