Good question
I was waiting for a co-worker outside Starbucks yesterday afternoon when a man walked past. Lost in thought, I didn’t notice him until he was two steps past me, then turned around and walked back toward me. He was middle-aged, missing teeth and had sort of a disheveled look about him.
“I wasn’t going to say anything,” he said. “I really wasn’t. I was just going to keep going.”
“Great,” I thought. “He’s going to ask for money. Will it be 50 cents for a bus fare? Five dollars for his kid’s medication?”
His breath was nauseating — booze and cigarettes.
“I wasn’t going to say anything. But I just have to…”
He pointed at me.
“That shirt… And that tie,” he said with disdain. “What were you thinking???”
